The post-industrial and globalization era has given rise to development that
neglects environmental sustainability. Economic activities and development
projects often ignore environmental issues that arise due to economic
activities. Deterioration of water and air quality, an increase in natural
disasters and disease outbreaks are caused by environmental pollution.
Therefore, every economic activity and development must be balanced with efforts
to preserve and restore the environment. This essay will discuss the concept of
sustainable development to create a balanced and sustainable environment.
Government Policy and Law Enforcement
The government as the main executive body of the country should implement
policies that support the preservation and restoration of the environment in
development. The Langkawi Declaration and Agenda 21 at the Rio De Janeiro Earth
Summit were held almost a decade ago but there has been no comprehensive
implementation from all parties. Therefore, the government should take a
paradigm shift in framing laws to ensure our environment is preserved. For
example, the prohibition of the use of polystyrene and plastic will reduce waste
and also save the environment where it takes years to decompose and threaten
marine life. Residential development or shopping centers should also develop
recreational areas where residents can enjoy the beauty of the environment as
well as relaxation and a healthy lifestyle. Thus, the government plays an
important role in formulating development policies so that it is designed and
implemented sustainably.
Law enforcement must be strengthened through the cooperation of trustworthy
and committed government officials. Weak law enforcement such as letting
offenders go unpunished will hinder our efforts to achieve sustainable
development. There are individuals who offer bribes as a solution to escape
legal action. The punishment imposed must be commensurate with the offense
committed that pollutes and destroys the environment by revoking their company
license and prohibiting them from economic activities. This corrupt practice is
a disease that can bring a community to a bad and unprofitable situation.
Therefore, the government should take care of the welfare of government
officials to avoid corruption and ensure that the law is fully enforced.
Renewable Energy and Environmental Education
Another step towards sustainable development is to introduce and promote the
use of renewable energy sources. Examples of renewable energy sources are
hydroelectric power, solar power, and wind power. The use of energy like this
will reduce the rate of carbon emissions that contribute to air quality
reduction and other pollution. This is in contrast to non-renewable energy
sources where the sources will run out at some point and leave a negative impact
on the environment. Tax exemptions or subsidies for the use of renewable
energy-based technology must be implemented as a step to encourage development
that does not pollute the environment and has a bright future.
Another step is to introduce environmental education to school children.
Environmental education includes the importance of the environment, the impact
of economic activities on the environment, and how to preserve and restore the
environment. This will instill environmental awareness in children and instill
habits that are environmentally friendly in daily life. Through these efforts,
sustainable development can be achieved and the environment preserved for future
generations. |
