The Pros and Cons of Being Sick |
|
Getting sick is something we all fear, and I am no exception. However, sometimes
being sick can also allow me to avoid some things that I don't want to do.
One late December morning in 2007, I woke up with a sudden headache, which was a
common ailment for me. I felt dizzy, and my mother said that I probably caught a
cold, so she immediately gave me some cold medicine.
"Can you make it through the day and go to school?" my mother asked with
concern. I shook my head and said it was okay.
At school, I acted as crazy as usual, laughing and joking around as if nothing
was wrong. But in the first afternoon art class, I started to feel a headache
and shivering. I put my hands in my pockets to keep warm and managed to endure
the math class. By the third period of Chinese self-study, my mother came to
pick me up with my sister because I had told her earlier that I was feeling a
little uncomfortable.
Since there was a New Year's Eve party at school the next day, the teacher had
given me the New Year's homework in advance. So I managed to dodge an hour of
boring Chinese class.
At the hospital, the doctor measured my body temperature and found out that I
had a high fever! I had to receive an IV drip at the hospital. In the evening,
my fever went down, and my mother took me to my sister's house to have porridge.
I didn't know any better and ate a lot of eggs (which isn't recommended when you
have a fever). That night, my fever spiked up to 41°C!
Fever is really uncomfortable: dizziness, stuffy nose, bitter mouth, and hot
body. It's just unbearable!
The next day, I went to get another IV drip in the morning and rested at home in
the afternoon. I didn't eat anything all day, so my mouth tasted bitter! I
couldn't eat anything. I took a nap in the afternoon and played computer games
for a while (actually, I was watching TV dramas). My mother bought me snacks
like potato chips, biscuits, and jelly, which I devoured. For some reason, I
could eat snacks even when I couldn't eat real food.
After two days, my illness got better, and on the last day of the New Year's
holiday, I went shopping with my classmates. Honestly, I had a pretty good time
those few days, but being sick was also painful! Ah! Being sick is so
unpredictable! |
