The Gift of Perseverance |
|
Throughout my journey of growing up, I have given and received many gifts.
However, the most unforgettable one was the birthday present my mother gave me
when I was seven years old.
On that evening, when my mother came home, she had a big box of jigsaw puzzles
in her hand. I knew that it must be my gift, so I couldn't wait to greet her.
"Mom, what is this?" I asked. "Child, of course, it's your birthday present,"
she replied. "Really? Thank you, Mom," I said with excitement.
With the jigsaw puzzle box in my hands, I went to my bedroom. But when I opened
the box, I was stunned. It said that there were 500 pieces in the puzzle. How
long would it take me to complete it?
At that moment, my mother walked in and said, "Child, if you can complete it in
one week and within one and a half hours, I will reward you with another gift."
I immediately picked up a pen and started calculating. "What? Two hours?" I
hesitated, but then I remembered that there would be another reward if I
completed it. So, I decided to give it a try.
For the next few nights, I spent my time doing homework and working on the
puzzle. However, after two days, I had not even finished the puzzle once, let
alone within two hours. What should I do? Should I give up? But if I completed
it, there would be another reward. So, I decided to try again.
After a few more days, I gradually became faster and could complete the puzzle
in one afternoon, but I was still far from two hours. With only one and a half
days left until the deadline, what should I do?
Finally, when my mother came to my room again, I still couldn't complete it
within two hours. I said to my mother, "Mom, I have tried my best, but..." I
hung my head in disappointment. "Can I still get the other gift?" I asked.
My mother smiled and said, "Child, actually you have already received the other
gift, which is the gift of perseverance in the face of setbacks!" |
