Memories of the Osmanthus Tree

Ten years ago, when I was still a young child, I came to Shanghai. The city was filled with endless traffic and an ocean of people, and in my deep memories, the Osmanthus tree by the door was the only thing that lingered.

Back then, Shanghai was not as prosperous as it is now, but it was still developing. When I arrived in the city with my parents, we stayed in Southern Bridge, a somewhat desolate city where people rushed through the streets with only time and determination in their eyes, including my parents. As a result, my childhood memories were only filled with an empty room. The happiest moments were when we built a small hut under the tree in front of our house with old windows and doors. We would secretly take fifty cents from home and buy some snacks to enjoy quietly. Occasionally, after a few days, when the tree bloomed with strange flowers, we could smell a faint fragrance, and this light scent accompanied us through our time in Shanghai. However, we still did not know the name of this tree. From then on, it remained a memory of a light scent.

The second time I smelled this fragrance in my life was when I was in high school. After ten years of yearning, I finally saw and smelled the fragrance again. It evoked too many memories, and my innocence had long been lost in this mundane world. Perhaps the Osmanthus tree in my memory no longer exists, and has turned into dust.

Every time the Osmanthus blooms, I come to sit under the tree and enjoy the tranquility. Looking up at the flowers blooming under the bright red sun always brings back too many memories, and it fills me with confidence. Life is just like this, and I am willing to quietly dedicate myself like the Osmanthus tree and spread its fragrance to the world.
