A Chance Encounter with a Good Samaritan |
|
It had been a long journey and I was tired. The unexpected rush of developments
in the Head Office had left me with the task of negotiating a collaboration with
a refinery in Singapore. As I sat on the plane trying to sort out my plans, my
temples were throbbing with pain. I closed my eyes, hoping to get some rest, but
to no avail. However, my discomfort was interrupted by the soft and pleasant
voice of the air hostess who brought me a hot cup of coffee.
As I sipped my coffee, I noticed the young gentleman in the next seat also
taking his cup. I appraised him and felt a sense of approval. He was a
pleasant-faced young man, almost boyish in appearance. His voice broke into my
thoughts, and he asked if I was feeling well and if he could do anything for me.
I explained that I was suffering from a bad headache, and the young man, Michael
Swartz, offered me a pill from his briefcase, as he worked for a pharmaceutical
company. As we chatted, we discovered a mutual interest in our personal
histories and professional ambitions. By the time we landed, we had established
a friendly rapport.
Michael kindly offered to look after my luggage, and I accepted his offer as my
reservations were at the same hotel as his. I waited in comfort while he
collected my baggage and got it through customs.
Upon arriving in my room, I decided to relax with a bath before the evening
conference. However, when I opened my suitcase, I discovered that it had been
switched with Michael's, which contained all my clothes and papers. I quickly
called the reception desk, but to my horror, I learned that Michael had left for
Bangkok with my luggage.
Despite the setback, the chance encounter with Michael had left a positive
impression on me. His kindness and willingness to help a stranger were admirable
qualities that left me feeling grateful for the unexpected friendship that had
developed during the flight. |
