The Offering takes a fresh approach to the popular horror theme of demons,
offering a Jewish, specifically Hasidic perspective. The movie revolves around a
Hasidic funeral director, Saul, his son Arthur, and his pregnant wife, Claire.
As Arthur tries to reconcile with his
father, he unwittingly sets free a demon that the elder man was trying to
contain. The demon takes a special interest in Claire and begins to wreak havoc
in the house, leaving the trio to seek help from a Hasidic history scholar to
perform a ritual that could save their lives and the life of their unborn child.
The movie benefits from its production design, cinematography, and eerie
moments. The story is not entirely original, but seeing a demonic presence from
a different cultural understanding makes for an interesting viewing. |
