"The Pope's Exorcist" follows the story of a witty and
sly priest named Father Gabriele Amorth, who is designated as the
pope's exorcist. The movie is marketed as a horror film, but it's more of a
theological action flick.
It is directed by Julius Avery and is loosely inspired by a real priest whose
story was told in a documentary by "The Exorcist" director William Friedkin. The
plot centers around Father Amorth's mission to drive a demon from the body of a
young boy at a decrepit abbey in rural Spain.
The movie is a watchable but far-from-special rehash of exorcism movie
cliches, with detours into a Vatican conspiracy plot that has been compared to
Dan Brown's novels. The opening sequence is the most original thing in the film,
and Crowe's performance as Father Amorth is the highlight. |
