"Maggie Moore(s)" is a film inspired by the true crime case of two women named
Mary Morris who were murdered, possibly by the same hitman. Directed by John
Slattery and featuring an ensemble cast, the
movie attempts to capture the darkly comedic style of the Coen brothers but
falls short in finding a consistent tone.
The story follows Jay Moore, a small-town scam artist, who hires a tough guy
named Kosco to scare his wife Maggie into silence about his illegal activities.
However, things go awry when Kosco sets Maggie's car on fire, leading Jay to
hatch a plan involving the other Maggie Moore in town.
While the chemistry between the actors is notable, the film fails to cohere
into a satisfying whole and rushes through an ending that feels messy. Despite
its shortcomings, the intriguing investigation led by Chief Jordan Sanders,
portrayed by Jon Hamm, hints at the potential for a compelling mystery series
with Hamm and Nick Mohammed as crime-solving partners. |
