The gruesome crime of July 13th, 1980, where a suburban mom struck another woman
with an axe 41 times, remains shrouded in mystery, despite numerous adaptations
in podcasts, true crime series, and mini-series. The latest iteration, "Love &
Death," portrays the story of Candy Montgomery, played by the talented Elizabeth
Olsen, who admits to the murder but claims self-defense.
The series captures the mundanity of Wylie, Texas, where Montgomery, a devout
Methodist, leads a humdrum life with her husband. Kelley's storytelling
primarily focuses on the courtroom drama, with solid performances from Tom
Pelphrey as Montgomery's attorney, Jesse Plemons as Allan Gore, the man with
whom Montgomery had an affair, and Lily Rabe as the victim, Betty Gore.
Olsen's portrayal of Candy is mesmerizing,
as she navigates through the aftermath of the crime. Although the storytelling
leaves much to be desired, the talented cast makes the series watchable. |
