The Evils of Gambling and the Need for Moral Education |
|
Gambling has been a popular pastime since ancient times and continues to be so
in modern times. While some may gamble for fun, the majority do so for the
possibility of quick financial gain. However, gambling can lead to ruin and
devastation, as many have lost everything they own and more to this addiction.
Even kingdoms have been lost to gambling, as illustrated in the story of the
Pandavas in the Mahabharatha.
The various forms of gambling, from card games to horse races to funfairs and
more, all have attendant evils. Many who gamble become debtors, leading to other
problems such as theft and fraud. The families of gambling addicts are also
affected, living in fear of what may happen if their loved one loses all their
money.
While it may be tempting to abolish gambling altogether, it has become a source
of revenue for governments and is licensed in many forms. Instead, the best way
to address the issue of gambling is through moral and religious education. By
strengthening the willpower of individuals, especially children, society can
work towards reducing the appeal of gambling and preventing addiction from
taking hold. It is the duty of the home, the school, and the government to
promote moral education and discourage the destructive influence of gambling. |
