I live in an agricultural community where most people are
farmers. The village is situated near a river, providing enough water for
profitable agriculture. There are green paddy fields around, and two crops are
raised each year. Despite following traditional farming, modernity has invaded
their homes, and most have electricity, radios, and bicycles. They send their
children to school in the neighboring town and actively engage in politics. Many
aspire to hold offices in the village council.
Farmers in the community look forward and are now using
tractors, good seeds, and fertilizers. They use pesticides and insecticides and
have built a marketing federation to sell their products at a profit. Paddy
growing is the major occupation, and some farmers have switched to cash crops
like sugar cane. Casual labor is employed during intensive operations.
The village has a tea shop, and the cinema and films are a
favorite topic. The small village school is not popular among the affluent, who
prefer sending their children to schools in the neighboring town. The chapel is
visited by the parish priest once a week on Sundays, and the Christian community
is a minority group in the village. |
