My mother, who was ninety-seven years old, has
just left us.
She was an easygoing and lively elderly lady.
She loved to have tea, watch movies, and go
shopping with her children and grandchildren.
Every weekend, if it wasn't one grandchild
inviting her, it was another. Whenever a new
restaurant opened, we would take her there to
try it first.
She was interested in everything. When she
turned eighty, she mentioned that she had never
been to a dance hall and didn't know what it was
like. So we accompanied her to one to satisfy
her curiosity. The host at the dance hall was
surprised to see an elderly person and thought
we were looking for a missing girl. After
explaining our purpose, they warmly welcomed us
and said she was the oldest guest they had ever
received. They even arranged for a few
well-mannered young ladies to chat with her.
This is just one example that shows her love for
novelty and her enjoyment of life's pleasures.
Traveling was her favorite, and we went with her
to Europe and North America. Despite her
advanced age, she had the strongest and most
agile steps. Many scenic spots that young people
found tiring and didn't want to explore, she
insisted on visiting before feeling satisfied.
She was born into a prominent family. Her father
(our grandfather) served as the salt transport
commissioner in Guangdong and Guangxi. When she
was young, her father sent her to school, and at
that time, there were only two girls in her
class, she being one of them. Since then, she
developed a habit of reading and has read many
classical novels. Ming Pao was her favorite
newspaper, which she read without interruption
for over thirty years. She was a fan of Jin
Yong's novels. She also enjoyed reading articles
in the supplements and sometimes criticized
them, saying that one was well-written and
another had printing errors.
She was an extraordinary woman who lived an
ordinary life. Our family used to be financially
struggling, but she worked hard and raised us,
taking care of several grandchildren from a
young age until they grew up. That's why her
grandchildren have a special bond with her. Even
today, they often say that no one else's cooking
can compare to their grandmother's.
On May 29th, at twelve forty in the afternoon,
my mother left us due to illness at the age of
ninety-seven. We are deeply saddened. However,
thinking that this is an inevitable process of
life and that she had the privilege of a long
and fulfilling life, we still feel grateful.
Moreover, she has only gone to a country unknown
to us, where the scenery might be even more
beautiful, the air fresher, and there may be
more fragrant flowers and birdsong. There, she
will regain the appearance of a lively young
girl and find many friends, running and playing
in the grassy gardens. With her personality,
would she be content with loneliness?
Mother, we send you our blessings. May you
always have a cheerful and joyful heart. |

The statement expresses a feeling of "life after death." From the
sentence, although the mother has passed away, the author does not feel
that she is gone. Instead, they believe that she has only gone to
another, even better realm where she continues her life and has her own
friends. This reflects the author's profound emotions towards their
mother. |
