Beiping, indeed, is a place worth reminiscing about.
Every time I encounter the winter wind and snow, an image of a snowy
Beiping emerges in my mind.
During the year I lived in Beiping, one day I woke up in the morning and
went to visit a friend in the south of the city. By the time I arrived,
the sun was already a bit disheveled. Around one o'clock, when I started
to head back home, the north wind was blowing fiercely, and the sky was
growing dark. I looked forward to reaching Luoma Market Street, where I
could hire a carriage. However, when I arrived at the bustling street
that was usually crowded with people, it had completely changed. There
were no carriages, not even pedestrians. It turned out that all those
bustling people had taken shelter from the wind and stayed at home,
leaving only me to face the wind head-on. The wind was strong, and now I
was walking against the wind. For every three steps forward, I would be
pushed back two steps. It seemed impossible to make any progress.
Suddenly, I thought of the boatmen carrying the ropes on their backs,
rowing against the current at Yanling Beach. So, I tilted my body
forward and imitated their walking style, fighting against the wind step
by step. It worked to some extent. However, along the way,
chessboard-sized clumps of mud, mixed with fine sand, were swept up by
the wind and struck my face. My eyes, nose, ears, mouth, and even the
gaps between my teeth were filled with sand. Not to mention, the mud
brought by the wind on my face was painful and cold, and the colder it
got, the more it hurt. Not good, I reached the tunnel of Xuanwu Gate. At
this moment, the wind pressed hard against the gate, and its force grew
stronger. I was finding it increasingly difficult to move forward. I had
no choice but to turn around, facing away from the wind, employing the
strategy of "calmly responding to the battle." Whenever it took a break,
I would turn around and catch up, taking a few steps. When it came
again, I would turn around again, facing away from it, waiting silently.
Following this strategy three times, I finally entered the city. Then,
using the walking style of the boatmen, I struggled to make my way home.
That night, exhausted from my battle with the wind, I fell asleep
immediately. When I woke up, there was no sound of the wind, and
sunlight shone through the paper window. I felt delighted and quickly
got up, rolled up the curtains, and looked outside. Oh! It turned out to
be a heavy snowfall. Overnight, without a sound, it had transformed the
courtyard of my home into a beautifully adorned scene.
The place where I lived was called Dashizuo, located between Jingshan
Park on the left and Beihai Park on the right, just a stone's throw away
from both. In a sudden burst of inspiration, I wanted to find a high
place to see the snowy scenery of Beiping. Immediately, I chose the
White Pagoda in Beihai. With the help of a walking stick, I quickly ran
to the top of the pagoda. Looking around in all directions, the entire
inner city of Beiping lay beneath my eyes, enveloped in the bright,
pure, and serene snow. Compared to yesterday's Beiping, which was filled
with flying sand, darkness, and strong winds, I could hardly believe it
was the same world. Yesterday was a Beiping covered in smoke and dust,
while today, there was not a speck of dust in the sky or on the ground.
Looking down at the area below, where the Five Dragon Pavilion and Yilan
Hall are located, it all appears as magnificent palaces and exquisite
buildings. And here I stand at the pinnacle of these splendid palaces
and buildings. At this moment, I truly feel a sense of "the higher one
climbs, the colder it gets." |
