An Incident In The Lift

Julia was on her way to school one fine Wednesday afternoon. She waited for the lift to come as usual and politely greeted all the neighbours she met along the way. That fateful day, she met old Mr. Wang in the lift. He was a busy old man, always going places at different times of the day. That day, he told Julia that he was on his way to see his grandson, who lived two blocks away.

The lift was on his way down when Mr. Wang began to have difficulty breathing. He heaved and sighed heavily. His hand was clutching at his heart. Julia was horrified when she realised that he was having a heart attack. She had learnt first aid in school but no amount of lessons prepared her for reality. Julia firmly grabbed onto Mr. Wang to prevent him from falling to the ground. Luckily, anohter neighbour, Miss Rahim, who was also in the lift helped Mr. Wang to steady himself.

It wasn't a moment too soon that the lift reached the ground floor, Julia rushed desperately to the public telephone and dialled the emergency number for the ambulance. Mr. Wang was sitting with Miss Rahim on the stone seats at the void deck of the block. Julia could see that he was weak. She waited for the ambulance to arrive before going to school.
