The best birthday present

Most people look forward to their birthdays because of the presents they receive. I have been getting my share of birthday presents but none of them have been remarkable so far. My parents always give me money which they tell me to save and not spend. My friends give me stationery and books which are fine but not that exciting. Then, on my seventeenth birthday, someone gave me the best birthday present ever.

My birthday began like any other day. It was a Thursday so I had to go to school. Only two people in school remembered it was my birthday. One bought me a drink at the canteen. The other got me a highlighter pen. The hours flew by and I forgot it was a special occasion. When I reached home after school, my parents were still at work. On the dining table was a white envelope with my name scrawled on it. I opened it and found a key and a note. `Happy birthday, my dear nephew,' was written in familiar writing. It was from my Aunt Jess. I looked at the key more closely and I realized it was a car key. Excitement grew within me. Could my aunt actually be giving me a car for my birthday?

I went out to see if there was really a car outside the house. Parked opposite the road was a small red car. It was not new though the paintwork was shiny. It had only two doors. I tried to open the door with the key and it worked! The car had a faint smell of leather. I studied the meters in the dashboard. Everything was in tip-top condition. I could imagine myself driving down the street.

I was beside myself with joy. This was the best birthday present I had ever got. My aunt must have found out that I was planning to get my driving license as soon as possible. Once I got my driving license, I would be able to get around on my own easily. Now, I would not have to wait for public transport. Getting to and from school would be a breeze. I would be independent and mobile. It gave me a great sense of freedom.

On my seventeenth birthday, I became the owner of my very own car thanks to my generous aunt. I will never forget the thrill of getting this gift. It was the perfect gift for me.
