Elevating National Sports

Sports can be defined as any physical activity that requires energy and is played as a game. In recent years, sports have evolved into a lucrative industry, generating income both locally and globally. For instance, the 2018 World Cup in Russia earned around 5 billion US dollars from broadcasting rights and related sources. However, before focusing on the global potential of sports, it is important to ask: Is the quality of our national sports commendable? What steps should be taken to raise the standard of sports in our country?

The first crucial step in developing the local sports industry is to ensure that comprehensive sports infrastructure is available nationwide. Every sport needs a proper venue, such as a field, swimming pool, or racetrack. If we look around our communities, do all areas have enough well-maintained facilities? If not, this lack of infrastructure is a key factor hindering the growth of national sports. Without easily accessible sports facilities, the discovery of athletic talent remains limited. To address this, the government or local authorities should collaborate with private companies to build and maintain sports infrastructure. This partnership benefits both the community and private sponsors—like CIMB Bank, which supports national cycling—by enhancing their brand image.

Secondly, improving the quality of national sports requires giving athletes exposure to international competition. Malaysia’s Ministry of Education has established sports schools to identify and nurture talent, aiming to produce athletes who can compete globally. However, many athletes still fall short of international success. One major reason is insufficient exposure to the international sports environment. Early exposure helps young athletes avoid cultural shock and adapt to high levels of competition. Initiatives like the Mokhtar Dahari Football Academy, which organizes tournaments involving teams from Japan, China, and Europe, provide invaluable experience to players aged 13 to 15. Regular international competition will help local athletes raise their performance to match international standards.

Finally, sports associations play a vital role in managing athletes and developing sports in the country. Unfortunately, reports of corruption and mismanagement within these associations often make headlines. Such internal problems divert attention from athletic development and harm the sport’s progress. To prevent this, the government should regulate sports associations to ensure transparent and efficient management. With proper oversight, associations can focus fully on developing sports, thereby improving national sports quality.

In conclusion, raising the standard of national sports depends on three key actions: providing complete sports infrastructure, exposing athletes to international competition, and ensuring transparent management of sports associations. By committing to these steps, we can enhance our national sports and build an industry that brings pride to the country.
