The Benefits of Making Sports Compulsory in Schools

Sports activities and physical education are integral components of the Malaysian school curriculum. However, not all students are required to participate in sports, and only exceptional athletes receive training and compete in competitions. In my opinion, sports should be mandatory in schools as it offers numerous benefits for students.

One of the most obvious advantages of sports is its ability to promote good physical health. Regular exercise, as provided by sports activities, can help prevent obesity, which is a growing problem among Malaysians. By making sports mandatory, even students who do not enjoy exercising can benefit from the physical activity and stay healthy.

Moreover, sports can teach students valuable soft skills and values that are beneficial in their personal and professional lives. Through sports, students can learn leadership skills, discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. In team sports such as football, basketball, or volleyball, players must cooperate with each other to achieve success. These skills are essential for the holistic development of children and teenagers.

Despite these benefits, some people argue that making sports compulsory in schools may have negative consequences. Competition is an inherent part of sports, which can make students overly competitive and too focused on winning. However, I believe that healthy competition is necessary for young people to learn how to compete fairly and honestly. They should also learn that trying their best is more important than winning. By experiencing healthy competition in school, students can be better prepared for the competitive world they will face in their future careers.

In conclusion, sports activities offer numerous benefits for students. By making sports compulsory in schools, students can improve their physical health, develop soft skills and important values, and prepare themselves for the competitive environment they will face in the future. Therefore, it is essential to make sports a mandatory part of the school curriculum.
