Reviving the Spirit of Neighborhood in Malaysian Society |
|
Malaysia is a unique country that has successfully achieved independence with a
diverse range of ethnicities and races living in harmony. However, over time,
ethnic sentiment has become an issue that can worsen the harmony that was built
and fought for by our ancestors. Therefore, harmony should begin from home or
from the neighborhood. A neighbor is someone who lives close to your house or
resides in the same area, either on the left, right, front or back, top or
bottom of your flat or condominium.
Efforts to Revive the Spirit of Neighborhood:
One of the efforts that can be made to revive the spirit of neighborhood that is
fading today is to create a community center in each housing area. For example,
a community hall and multipurpose hall that can be used for community activities
such as clean-up efforts. Then, organizations such as neighborhood associations
need to be established to manage matters related to neighborhood activities.
Therefore, all members of the community should take part and contribute what is
necessary to achieve a harmonious and prosperous neighborhood spirit. The Malay
proverb "round water due to the barrier, round man because of consensus" is
appropriate to describe the spirit of neighborhood that should be ingrained in
the people of Malaysia.
Another effort is to encourage community activities such as clean-up efforts and
sports among the neighborhood. This responsibility lies with non-government
organizations such as neighborhood associations and community service by private
companies. Clean-up efforts or rehabilitation of the community hall or
multipurpose hall can bring the community closer and improve community
infrastructure, ensuring the area is clean and free from disease. As the Malay
proverb says, "while diving drink water," such activities bring many benefits to
all.
Reviving the Culture of Visiting:
Another effort that is fading today is the culture of visiting. The busyness of
pursuing a career and daily affairs has contributed to the decline of the
visiting culture among neighbors that was once a tradition of our ancestors.
Therefore, if we have the opportunity to visit our neighbors, especially on
special occasions, it is a pure effort that needs to be shown to the younger
generation so that they are aware that the value of consensus in neighborhood is
good and beneficial to all. If shyness is a barrier, then start by greeting when
you meet during differences in each housing area.
Role of the Mass Media:
The mass media also plays an important role in promoting efforts to make the
community live in the spirit of neighborhood. With the convenience at our
fingertips today, the mass media should be responsible for creating programs
with content that applies the values of neighborhood in society. This will raise
awareness and understanding among the community about the importance of living
in harmony with each other.
In conclusion, the spirit of neighborhood is a vital aspect that must be
preserved and continued to be instilled in the hearts of the people of Malaysia.
It is time for all of us to work together to revive the spirit of neighborhood,
from creating a community center, encouraging community activities, reviving the
culture of visiting, to the role of the mass media. By doing so, we can ensure
that the harmony that was built and fought for by our ancestors will continue to
live on for future generations. |
