Tackling Truancy Among Students in the Modern Era |
|
In today’s rapidly modernizing world, society is often taken aback by the
alarming social phenomena involving the younger generation, frequently
highlighted in the media. One such issue is school truancy, which negatively
affects the students involved and reflects poorly on the education system. This
problem is often viewed as a symptom of deeper flaws within Malaysia’s education
structure as outlined in the National Education Policy. It raises the pressing
question: are students becoming disinterested or disillusioned with the current
teaching and learning process? This question continues to spark debate among the
public, who wonder why students would choose to skip school instead of engaging
in classroom learning under proper discipline. As such, it is vital to explore
the steps that can be taken to address and reduce truancy among students.
Implementing Stricter and More Effective School Policies
One primary solution lies in enforcing more effective disciplinary laws in
schools. Schools are not just places of learning; they are institutions that
should be respected and appreciated by all students. Unfortunately, some
students lack the maturity to differentiate between right and wrong, making them
vulnerable to skipping school. Multiple factors may influence this behavior,
from peer pressure to lack of motivation.
Therefore, schools must take proactive measures to curb truancy. This includes
tightening existing regulations, offering regular counseling services, assigning
students to community or volunteer programs, and, in serious cases, involving
local authorities. Additionally, schools can organize motivational seminars and
awareness campaigns to help students understand the value of education and the
long-term disadvantages of skipping school in favor of loitering in public
places.
Parental Involvement as a Key to Prevention
Equally important is the role of parents in guiding and nurturing their
children. Parents are the primary educators in a child's life and hold the
responsibility of instilling discipline, moral values, and sound judgment. While
schools focus on academic learning, the foundation of behavior and manners is
built at home.
Truancy often stems from a lack of parental involvement or issues at home, such
as work-related absenteeism or family conflicts. In such cases, it is unfair to
place the entire blame on students. Instead, parents must ensure a stable,
supportive environment where their children feel secure and ready to engage in
school activities. As the saying goes, “It all starts at home.” This sentiment,
echoed by thinkers like Franklin D. Roosevelt, underlines the crucial influence
of the family unit in shaping a child's future.
Societal Responsibility and Collective Action
Beyond the roles of schools and families, society itself plays a vital role in
addressing truancy. Every individual in the community bears a responsibility to
create a positive, supportive environment for youth. This can be done by
actively supporting both schools and parents in their efforts, and by organizing
educational and recreational programs aimed at engaging students outside school
hours.
Furthermore, communities can assist school dropouts by offering vocational
training or part-time job opportunities, giving them a second chance to become
productive citizens. A society that shows care and commitment to its youth can
help deter students from straying down the wrong path. |
