In today's world surrounded by advancements in science and technology, the use
of mobile phones has increased rapidly due to the need and ability of each
individual to own one. This also includes students who have their own mobile
phones, either from their own purchases or as gifts from their parents. The
current controversy revolves around the effects of mobile phone usage among
students. Every technology today is sure to have both positive and negative
impacts. The root of it all depends on the individual to utilize the positive
effects of the technology or to harm themselves with negative implications
received.
Positive Impacts
From my perspective, the usage of mobile phones among students has more positive
impacts compared to negative ones. This is because if we look back at the
objective of the creation of mobile phones, it was to facilitate communication
between one another. Therefore, if students use their phones to connect with
friends or teachers regarding school activities, it is easier and quicker.
Furthermore, if there is an emergency at school or outside of school, the use of
mobile phones by students is necessary to ensure their safety is guaranteed. In
fact, there are now many smart phone applications that allow parents to track
the location of their children so they know where they are. As a result, the
ease of conveying information quickly and effectively as a result of using
mobile phones is beneficial for students to manage their time and themselves,
especially in regards to school, safety, and family.
Access to Information
Moreover, the ease of accessing information at the tip of their fingers should
be utilized by students. With the rapidly developing and affordable online
network, students can use their mobile phones to surf the web and search for
additional information on the subjects they want. There are many online learning
alternatives that are worth taking advantage of by today's students. For
example, teachers use YouTube as an interactive teaching medium with students
because of the variety of content uploaded as videos that can attract the
attention and focus of students towards a subject. Thus, students are also able
to learn independently at home by taking advantage of online learning
applications offered. Therefore, effective usage of mobile phones can have
positive implications for its users, particularly among students.
Negative Impacts
If viewed from a different angle, students who frequently use mobile phones can
easily be distracted by the games and entertainment they obtain online. We
cannot deny that students also need entertainment to reduce stress in their
studies, but it must be controlled so that it does not interfere with their
learning process. The more time spent playing games and having fun, the less
time is spent on academics, which could affect their academic performance. In
addition, students who rely too much on their mobile phones can also experience
eye strain and headaches.
In conclusion, the use of mobile phones among students has both positive and
negative impacts. It depends on how students utilize their mobile phones to
determine whether they benefit from it or harm themselves with its negative
implications. Students should take advantage of the positive aspects of using
mobile phones, such as easy access to information, convenience in communication,
and security, but also be aware of its negative aspects and control their usage
