The Pros and Cons of Buying Property in Hillside Areas

Over the years, there have been several tragic incidents related to landslides on hillsides, including the 2011 Hulu Langat, 2008 Bukit Antarabangsa and the 1993 Highland Towers incidents. Despite these tragedies, many people still choose to purchase property on hillsides. In this essay, we will explore the reasons behind this trend and the potential drawbacks that come with it.

One of the main reasons why people prefer to buy property on hillsides is the unobstructed view that it provides. Hillside properties offer scenic views of the surrounding terrain, which is considered a prime factor in real estate. Additionally, the feeling of exclusivity and remoteness also appeals to affluent buyers who desire more privacy.

However, there are several disadvantages associated with owning hillside property. For instance, the man-made accessibility to these properties can result in steep driveways, which can be difficult for individuals with limited mobility. Moreover, the tall trees surrounding the area may block the view, and cutting them down could destabilize the soil on slopes, leading to water erosion and mudslides.

Maintaining the slope cover and drainage system is also an ongoing concern for hillside homeowners. Furthermore, the foundation of the houses may counteract with the years, leading to potential landslides that could wipe out the entire hillside. Finally, natural disasters such as heavy rainfall can cause significant damage to hillside properties.

In conclusion, purchasing property on hillsides has its benefits and drawbacks. Prospective buyers must weigh the advantages and disadvantages of owning a hillside property and consider where they want to live. While the unobstructed view and exclusivity that hillside properties offer may be tempting, it is important to bear in mind the potential risks associated with owning a property on a slope.
