Rainwater Harvesting: A Sustainable Solution to Malaysia's Water Crisis

In the midst of Malaysia's excessive water consumption and impending water shortage, rainwater harvesting presents a sustainable solution to address the issue. The value attached to the use of water has been forgotten by many Malaysians, with local water consumption exceeding the UN recommended level of 160 liters per day per person. The looming water shortage, predicted by a United Nations report to occur in the mid-2111 century, should serve as a warning to Malaysians to conserve and preserve water resources.

Rainwater harvesting should be widely practiced among the people, as it offers an alternative to depleting natural water supplies for non-essential purposes. The norm in the plantations on Carey Island, residents have been collecting rainwater for the past twenty-five years to water plants and wash cars. The houses are built with a gutter system that channels rainwater from the roof into large water tanks placed outside the houses. Water flows out from taps, just like treated water, demonstrating the efficiency of the system.

In addition to individual rainwater harvesting, the Malaysian government is planning to introduce by-laws requiring certain buildings to be equipped with devices to collect, store and use rainwater. The Bandar Utama Group, which runs shopping malls, has implemented a rainwater harvesting system in their new wing that saves them around 30% a year in water bills.

The implementation of rainwater harvesting presents a logical and self-preserving solution to Malaysia's water crisis. With the possibility of a future water shortage imminent, it is essential to make the most of rainwater. Starting out small with pails when it rains and gradually installing gutters, piping and water tanks, Malaysians can make a significant impact in conserving water resources. By ignoring the signs and disregarding the importance of conservation and preservation, the wrath of nature knows no bounds.
