Importance of Self-Discipline to Students |
|
In this decade, whether we realize it or not, we are constantly bombarded with
news of our country's increasing global presence. Yet, behind all the hype, we
are often shocked by the various social problems plaguing society today. If
examined, those who are trapped in these problems often lack discipline, whether
in school or at home. According to the Dewan dictionary, discipline is the
exercise of thought and behavior to control oneself and obey rules. Students may
not realize that by being disciplined, they can benefit both directly and
indirectly. Therefore, what are the benefits of practicing self-discipline in a
student's life?
One of the benefits of self-discipline among students is that it can shape good
behavior. The rules established to facilitate the management of students in
school are guidelines that determine their level of discipline. The school will
certainly provide a copy of the rule book to every student, but it is usually
ignored by them. The rule book is guidance that should be obeyed by students,
just as the Quran is a guide to life for Muslims. Therefore, if students follow
every rule in school, discipline problems will decrease, and their self-esteem
will improve. Those who are patient will surely be rewarded with good blessings,
just as self-discipline challenges our mental ability to continue performing a
task consistently before achieving the desired result.
In addition, self-discipline is essential for students to avoid negative
influences. The influence of mass and social media today has led some young
people to be influenced by a virtual life that cannot be distinguished from
reality. Most young people today enjoy playing video games and watching
streaming videos for entertainment. However, there are some students who get
carried away and neglect their studies, resulting in sleep deprivation and lack
of attention in class. This matter can be controlled by giving them a schedule
or a timeframe to enjoy themselves. For example, parents can ensure that their
children study for two to three hours and give them 30 minutes to an hour to
rest or relax. This time management is a basic self-discipline that can become a
useful value for students as they grow up.
Furthermore, self-discipline is crucial among students to determine their level
of success, whether in academics, co-curricular activities, or both. We are
often associated with the fact that students who excel in academics must have a
high level of self-discipline. It is undeniable that the efforts of outstanding
students are driven by discipline and high commitment. In my opinion, students
who excel in co-curricular activities such as sports are also the result of high
discipline. This is because sports activities require a high level of discipline
during training and when participating in competitions. Not only physical
strength is used, but also mental acumen in making the right decisions, which
can ultimately lead to victory in the sport. In conclusion, discipline is the
key to success, especially among students today who need to compete to secure a
better future.
At the same time, self-discipline is an essential element in students to
cultivate other pure values. Discipline can be imagined as the roots that
support a tree to stand tall, even in the midst of storms and harsh weather.
Self-discipline among students can also help to cultivate other pure values such
as honesty, responsibility, and respect for others.
In conclusion, self-discipline is essential for students to shape good behavior,
avoid negative influences, determine their level of success, and cultivate other
pure values. Self-discipline is not only a useful tool for students now, but it
can also become a valuable asset for them as they grow into adults. Therefore,
it is important for parents and educators to instill the importance of
self-discipline among students from a young age, so that they can succeed in
their future endeavors. |
